HISTORY OF THE AGENCY
-
Jefferson County AIDS In Minorities, Inc. (AIM) was officially founded in 1988 by a group of African American nurses, lawyers, counselors, social workers, and people living with HIV infection. These individuals were concerned and interested in working to prevent the spread of HIV and AIDS in the African American communities of Birmingham, Jefferson County Alabama, and the surrounding counties. The history of AIM's founding is similar to that of many African American community based organizations throughout the country. AIM traces its roots back to the public health departments' recognition that African Americans were being drastically impacted by the AIDS pandemic and that African Americans should be assembled to formulate culturally appropriate interventions. Jefferson County AIDS In Minorities, Inc. was formed not only to educate the African American community, but to also foster the self empowerment of people living with HIV infection and AIDS. Jefferson County AIDS In Minorities, Inc. accomplishes this through the development, implementation, and maintenance of a system of progams for people infected with and affected by HIV disease.
