FLOYD
SONNIER (1933-2002), known to many as “The Artist of the Cajuns,” was a
lifelong resident of the Cajun Country of south Louisiana. An internationally
acclaimed pen-and-ink artist, he graduated in commercial art from the
University of Southwestern Louisiana in Lafayette in 1961 after serving a
brief stint in the U.S. Army. In a prolific career that spanned a quarter of
a century, he specialized in drawings that depict life in the old-time Cajun
culture, particularly scenes set in the first half of the Twentieth Century.
A native of the Pointe Noire community near Church Point,
La., he was married to Verlie Gay of Church Point in 1965. They have four
children, Gil, Mark, Tim and Annette.
